Shanghai flue-cured · natural-tobacco · top-shelf gift

Panda Hard Classic Xiongmao Ying Jingdian

The hard-pack edition of Panda (Xiongmao), Shanghai Tobacco’s quietly legendary flagship — a mellow, natural-tobacco flue-cured smoke that runs on restraint and purity rather than punch. At 10 mg it still draws remarkably smooth with almost no throat hit; a connoisseur’s reserve more than a party cigarette, in the current 2024 edition (da qing mao).

Smoker · Cultural Notes

How Chinese smokers talk about it — impressions and culture, not official claims.

How smokers describe it

Entry

Soft, full and remarkably smooth. Despite the 10 mg tar there is almost no throat hit — the smoke enters gently with light-to-moderate draw resistance.

Mid

Clean natural tobacco (ben xiang) steps forward with a distinct bamboo-leaf note (zhu ye xiang) and a faint sweet, woody edge — silky and mellow. Several smokers read it as a higher-spec soft Chunghwa, if a touch light.

Finish

A clean, sweet aftertaste, tidy and pure on the exhale, with a gentle kick that lingers without turning harsh. Honest caveat: the ash tends to fall loose, and some batches draw slightly harder than others.

the everyday of it

Panda is a first-family name in Chinese tobacco — created in 1956 as the top-shelf flagship of Shanghai Tobacco, prized for how little it shouts. Much of its aura comes from a special-supply (te gong) past, and stories linking it to national leaders are part of the folklore that follows the brand; we pass those along as lore, not fact. What is actually on record is the ‘No. 53 special-supply’ (53-hao te gong) formula lineage the line is said to carry. Hard Classic is the hard-pack expression of that heritage, relaunched in 2024 as the edition collectors call the ‘big green cat’ — the same mellow, Chunghwa-adjacent purity in a current box.

gifting

A high gifting tier, and that is the point. Panda is one of China’s understated top-shelf gift smokes — Shanghai Tobacco’s flagship face, fitting for elders, seniors and senior-level social occasions. It gives face through restraint rather than flash: not about strength or punch, but purity and natural-tobacco character — a Chinese ‘reserve’ to be offered quietly, not a loud party cigarette.

Smoker terminology

Ben xiang — ‘natural / original tobacco aroma’ — the pure, un-over-flavoured tobacco character the blend deliberately foregrounds.

Zhu ye xiang — the clean, faintly sweet ‘bamboo-leaf’ note reviewers consistently pick out in Panda.

Da qing mao — ‘big green cat’ — smokers’ nickname for the current 2024 new hard Classic edition.

Telling the versions apart

This is the current 2024 edition (da qing mao); an older edition circulated under a different code and has been discontinued. Many longtime smokers of the older ‘green cat’ still prefer it, and batch-to-batch consistency on the new version can wobble — worth knowing before you buy. The 10 mg tar / 1.0 mg nicotine blend is the constant, and the small-pack barcode is how you confirm you have the current box.

Good to know

Is this a strong cigarette?

No. At 10 mg tar / 1.0 mg nicotine it still smokes remarkably mellow, with almost no throat hit — a smooth connoisseur’s smoke, not a punchy one. Heavy smokers after a strong hit will find it restrained.

How is it different from Chunghwa?

Same mellow natural-tobacco family — both are Shanghai Tobacco. Many smokers read Panda Hard Classic as a higher-spec, slightly lighter and softer take than Chunghwa, built on the same purity-first house style.

Is the new version as good as the old one?

Honestly, opinions lean the other way. Several longtime smokers of the older ‘green cat’ find the new da qing mao only so-so — the aroma is still there but less ‘wow’, and batches vary. We’d rather tell you than oversell it.

How do I know it’s genuine?

Scan the small-pack barcode 6901028212571 before opening the carton — it should return this exact current edition, with the steel stamp, anti-counterfeit mark and health warning intact.

Is it a good gift?

Yes — it is one of China’s top-shelf gift smokes, Shanghai Tobacco’s flagship, suited to elders, seniors and high-end occasions. It gives face through restraint and heritage rather than strength.
