Made in Changde, Hunan by China Tobacco Hunan, Furong Wang has sat on Chinese business tables since the 1990s — the cigarette you pass around at a dinner or hand a client. Its whole pitch was image: it was one of the first Chinese brands to sell itself as the smoke of people who’ve made it, and it’s ranked beside Chunghwa, Yuxi and Huanghelou at the top of the premium shelf.
The Hard Blue landed in 2000 as the brand’s first blue pack and kicked off what the industry called the ‘blue storm’: the first high-end Chinese cigarette to team a deep-blue box with a bright-blue tip, a look that became a second identity next to the gold. Two things to keep straight, though — this is the plain classic blue with no crushable bead, and there’s a newer near-identical version that does hide a capsule and smokes noticeably different; and ‘Furong Wang’ means ‘king of the lotus’, after the gold flower on the box, not a real place.

Changde is the only cigarette factory in China that makes nothing but high-end brands, and the tobacco here is a mix of Zimbabwean and plateau leaf out of Yunnan and Guizhou, picked over by hand and slow-aged so the smoke stays clean.
